Eric Voegelin (1901–1985) taught law at the University of Vienna, government at Louisiana State University, political theory and philosophy at the University of Munich, and was professor emeritus of political science at the University of Munich and Henry Salvatori Distinguished Scholar at the Hoover Institution, Stanford. Among his many works were the monumental four-volume Order and History (1956-1974), The New Science of Politics (1952), Anamnesis (1978), Science, Politics, and Gnosticism (Two Essays) (1968), and numerous other publications. He has been called “probably the most influential historian of our century, and certainly the most provocative,” and “one of the most distinguished interpreters to Americans of the non-liberal streams of European thought.”
